Preparation and Characterization of a Biodegradable Mulch: Paper Coated with Polymerized Vegetable Oils
نویسنده
چکیده
Kraft paper was coated with resins based on vegetable oils and then tested for mechanical properties, rate of biodegradation in soil, and ability to inhibit weed growth. Resins included oxidatively polymerized linseed oil (LO) and a polyester formed by the reaction of epoxidized soybean oil and citric acid (ESO–CA). Tensile strength of LO-coated paper (82 MPa) was slightly higher than uncoated paper (68 MPa), while the tensile strength of ESO–CA coated paper was somewhat lower (45 MPa). Elongations to break (3–8%) were similar for all samples. The rates of weight loss and tensile strength during soil burial decreased as follows: uncoated paper . LO coated paper . ESO–CA coated paper. The polymerized oils acted as barriers to penetration of microorganisms to the cellulosic fibers. Resin-coated papers inhibited weed growth for . 10 weeks, while uncoated paper was highly degraded and ineffective by 6–9 weeks. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.* J Appl Polym Sci 73: 2159–2167, 1999

Biodegradation Behavior of Some Vegetable Oil-based Polymers
The potential biodegradability of several vegetable oil-based polymers was assessed by respirometry in soil for 60–100 days at temperatures of 30–58 C. Films of soybean oil and linseed oil which were oxidatively polymerized (Co catalyst) on a kraft paper support were 90%–100% mineralized to CO2 after 70 days at 30 C. Mineralization of polymerized tung oil to CO2 was much slower than soy or lins...
متن کاملLubricant basestocks from vegetable oils
Oil Chemical Research. USDA l-ARS-NCAUR. 1815 N. U;liuersity Street, Peoria, IL 61604, USA Accepted 8 October 1999 Compared to the lubricants made of petroleum, vegetable-based lubricants are much more biodegradable but inferior in many other technical characteristics. The basestock typically contributes to more than 80% of lubricant and must meet performance criteria in such aspects as cleanli...
متن کاملPreparation, Characterization and in vitro Release Studies of Enoxaparin in Nanoparticle form and Enterically Coated Tablets Containing Different Enhancers
In the past decade, many strategies have been developed to enhance oral drug delivery. Different techniques were investigated, amongst those the use of permeation enhancers such surfactants and biodegradable polymers were studied more extensively. Chitosan derivatives have been studied as permeation enhancer in free soluble form and as nanoparticulate systems. The aim of the current work wa...
متن کاملEco-Friendly Multipurpose Lubricating Greases from Vegetable Residual Oils
Environmentally friendly multipurpose grease formulation has been synthesized by using Jatropha vegetable residual oil with lithium soap and multifunctional additive. The thus obtained formulation was evaluated for its tribological performance on a four-ball tribo-tester. The anti-friction and anti-wear performance characteristics were evaluated using standard test methods. The biodegradability...
متن کاملPreparation and Characterization of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Polythiophene Nanocomposites and its Gas Sensitivity Study at Room Temperature
The nanocomposites of polythiophene and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization method using anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3) as an oxidant. The MWCNTs functionalized and ultrasonicated to obtain uniform dispersion within the polythiophene matrix. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the mo...
